30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge: The Tip That Worked Best For Me!

By Karen Hellier

I Did It!!!

I completed the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge!!! Yippee! I am SO happy, and actually a bit surprised. I started off well, and very motivated. But somewhere along the journey, I started taking it easy a bit. It's when I hit about 17 hubs in 17 days, and felt I was doing pretty well that I started getting lax. I think I felt the pressure was off because I had been able to keep up, so it seemed easier than I had first thought. BUT, once I got out of the habit of writing every day, it was hard to get back into the swing of things.

Best Tip For Me

The one tip that helped me the most was on someone else's hub about completing the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge. Unfortunately, I don't remember who it was that even suggested it, but it helped immensely. The tip was that it is okay to start a hub, then save it to finish on another day. That was like someone giving me permission to not have to finish everything all at once. I am a bit forgetful too ( you can read about my ADD diagnosis in one of my hubs!). So, being afraid that I would forget a title that I had in mind for a hub, pushed me to log into my Hub Pages Account, click on the "Start a New Hub" tab, and then put down a title. I would then save it unpublished, but when I would log onto my account, there it would be. Sometimes I would just have the title, and sometimes I had a paragraph or two. When I got to day 21 and realized I was 4 hubs behind, and that day was almost over, I started to panic a bit, and started thinking I may not be able to complete the challenge after all. Once I started entering titles for new hubs I had in mind, I didn't have to panic anymore about not making it. I had about 5 - 6 ideas in the Hub idea tank of my brain at any moment, and all I had to do was log onto my Hub Pages account to see them, and decide which one I felt like working on. There was some freedom involved in that as well. I could pick and choose whichever topic drew me to it for that day. I currently have 6 more topics for hubs that I have started, and that's the average I had once I started just plugging in the titles and saving them. I had a few that really took a lot emotionally. When i would log on during certain nights, there were times I just wasn't up to baring my soul. So, I would save those for another day, when I had more time, or emotional strength. And instead, choose something easier, or that just required lists of things with short explanations.

Encouragement

During the challenge I had 2 different people encouraging me, in 2 different ways. The first was my husband...a wonderful man who is totally supportive of everything I do...even when he thinks I am a bit off my rocker. He told me every day that I could complete this challenge and that he believed in me. He believed in me even when I doubted myself, so eventually I figured if he knew I could do it, then I must be able to.

The second person who encouraged me was my 17 year old daughter. She didn't actually encourage me, but actually tried to discourage me by telling me I couldn't do it. She repeatedly reminded me that I often set goals that I then don't reach. I love this child like crazy, but we are very different people. I am a dreamer with my head in the clouds, and she is a very practical person. To her, the world is a very different place than it is to me. I think I have more hope than she does. But hope won't win this challenge so I'm glad I had my husband and the tip to start a few articles at once in my corner. Both of those helped me reach the goal of 30 Hubs in 30 Days!

Congratulations Karen! You did it! Starting hubs before publishing them does help you remember the topics, but sometimes it even raises the score of your hub while it is marinating.

Congrats! I tried once and failed miserably! :) I guess working full time with two little ones is not a great mix for the challenge. Maybe I'll try again another time.

Great job Karen! Sort of unrelated, but I found a new Sweeps while clicking on an add that appeared by one of your stories. Harry & David ...FYI !!

Good for you! I haven't ever tried one but my sister (hubber Denise Handlon) did a couple times and I believe she completed both of them. From what I hear it's really a challenge and you have every right to be proud of yourself!

Thanks to all of you. There were days when it was easier than I thought, and days when it was harder. But having encouragement does help...as does having people who don't believe you can do it. I loved proving them wrong!!! But starting some and saving does take some of the pressure off...when you log back in, you know you're already half done with some so it's not like starting from scratch each time.

Arline,

How cool is that about the sweeps? I hope you win!

Great job Karen! You were able to come up with that many topics and stay motivated to finish. That is a good idea to save a hub and finish it later. I will keep it in mind if/when I do a challenge.

Well done. I am pleased for you. I did the 30 day Challenge when I started about 2 years ago, but I was so new to writing. I did about 16 days.

Ps. I'm sure by now you must have worked out that if you see a Hub with interesting/useful info, you can Bookmark it to save you searching for it again. (Top right of the Hub)

Hope you continue to enjoy writing here.

Best Wishes

Elena

Congratulations Karen, well, it seems you just joined Hubpages and went straight into the 30/30 challenge. I admire you a lot and you have inspired me to do it because I have been toying with the idea but been too afraid to start. While I was reading this hub, an idea struck and I knew exactly what I must do so watch me. I will be killing two birds with one stone! Thanks for sharing and for the encouragement once again.

I knew you could do it from the very beginning. When you set your mind to do something, you usually succeed! I appreciate your ambition. I observed how much time and effort you put into this, and you did it! I'm proud of you and the superb way you express yourself in your hubs. Keep it up!

Kimberly Lake,

You can do it. Just brainstorm a lot of topics ahead of time so you'll be set to go. I am looking forward to watching your success.

Dear Lady E,

Actually, no, I hadn't figured that out about saving an interesting hub. Thanks for the tip. I think you should try the 30 hubs in 30 days again...just read all the tips on it, and have a list of ideas to start you off with first. It's a great feeling to have accomplished that!

My teenaged daughter was giving me a hard time about it...that it didn't count because I didn't write 1 a day for 30 days...the challenge is not "1 Hub a Day for 30 Days"...LOL...it's "30 Hubs in 30 Days" so the way I took that is to shoot for the end result! Which thankfully I did accomplish! Now I have some goals for each month, but not 30 in 30...I want to try for 15 hubs in 30 days each month until June, and see how I do.Nothing official...just my own challenge to myself!

Karen, congratulations on finishing the challenge! I just finished it and I can testify that it's harder than it looks! I love your tip and I actually do this quite a bit. Sometimes a new day just gives you enough of a fresh perspective that you need. Great motivating hub!

Thanks for reading and commenting prairieprincess. I am going to try the challenge again in June when I break from my other job at the end of the school year. Hopefully I will be past 70 hubs by then, so when I complete the 30 hubs in 30 days challenge by the end of July, I will have over 100 hubs, in 6 months.
